Attorneys blame business breakups on economy
Written by Ben Keller
Just like divorce leaves once enamored couples in heated battles over rights and assets, business breakups can be just as ugly and according to some local attorneys, are occurring more frequently as financial misfortunes abound.
Jody Winter, an attorney with Gilmour, Wood, Vineyard and Magnus in Fresno, said the firm is currently working through around 12 cases of partnership dissolutions compared with six total cases last year.
“I’m not sure what’s causing it other than the general economy, but a good portion of our cases are partnership dissolutions where one partner no longer has any capacity to fund the enterprise,” said Winter, a member of the San Joaquin College of Law Alumni Circle. “Generally it’s trended up since the economy went bad.”
