More local biz grads looking to law school
Written by Charles McCarthy
San Joaquin College of Law in Clovis reports a hefty jump in the number of students with business-related college degrees entering law school for the 2011 autumn semester.
Dean Jan Pearson reports that in fall 2010, those with business degrees accounted for some 9.6% of the entering class. For fall 2011, college business graduates make up 26.6% of entering students. One incoming student holds both a degree in economics from California State University, Fresno and a master of business administration from an East Coast university.
“A legal education is designed to give the student fundamental training in the principal areas of practice, including both contract and criminal law,” Pearson said. “This enables the graduate to adapt to different areas of law as his or her interests or the needs of his or her clients change.”
There's no concrete evidence linking the increase in law students at San Joaquin College to the difficulty college grads report this summer finding jobs in an unsure business economy. Business-related baccalaureate degrees include such majors as business administration, international business, industrial technology, accounting, economics, agribusiness, industrial technology, accounting, construction management and merchandising.
