What does the SJCL Alumni Association do?
Probably the most visible event the Alumni Association sponsors is an annual Christmas party for the residents of the Marjaree Mason Center. We host a holiday celebration at SJCL, and thanks to generous donations by SJCL Alumni and staff, each child receives a toy and an item of clothing which are distributed by Santa and one of his elves. Each mother also receives a gift. This year Orange Belt Stages delivered the mom and kids for a great treat. For the last several years, Kopi Sotiropolous from KMPH has hosted the celebration and our own Santa, Rick Horowitz.
Other annual events include “Cookie and Coffee Night” in April, when alums visit the Remedies class to answer questions about Bar exam preparation. Alums also attend the annual scholarship dinner and graduation ceremonies. Current students are always seeking greater participation from former students. For many years, the Alumni Association has funded three scholarships for SJCL students, The Spirit of SJCL, The Carolyn T. Mirviss and the Judy Wiseman Memorial Scholarship.
Our greatest strides, however, have been over the past few years, as the Alumni Association has strengthened its ties to SJCL students, working closely with the Student Body Association on a number of projects. In the Fall of 2008, Alums joined with the SBA to sponsor a Senior Citizen’s Law Day and a free "GOT MCLE" event. Students also assist the Alumni Association with the Judy Wiseman Memorial Golf Tournament, which took place last year on March 29, 2008. This contact between students and alumni benefits everyone, forging friendships and the potential for employment contacts in the future.
