What is Mediation?
Mediation is a voluntary settlement process in which a neutral third party, called a mediator, guides the disputants to a reasonable resolution of their dispute by helping them:
- Focus on their needs
- Explore alternatives
- Resolve legal issues
- Negotiate agreements
...and prepare for the future.
What are the benefits?
Mediation is a process which offers a confidential, timely and cost-effective dispute resolution alternative to costly, time consuming litigation.
With Mediation YOU make the decisions that will affect your life and the lives of your loved ones.
How does the program work?
Students and faculty of San Joaquin College of law provide free alternative dispute resolution services in family law property disputes.
We meet with husband and wife in the mediation setting to help them negotiate a legal agreement while avoiding the time and expense of going to court.
In our role as mediators, we do not represent either party, nor do we represent the parties jointly. Our task is to help guide people to a mediated settlement of their family law property dispute.
Once an agreement is negotiated, we will prepare a copy for each participant to review with an attorney of choice and for filing with the court when signed.
Purpose of SJCL's Mediation Program

- Help participants avoid costly, time consuming litigation.
- Reduce the courts overwhelming case load.
